JOE COCKER / HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS TO PERFORM AT DTE ENERGY MUSIC THEATRE AUGUST 9 TICKETS ON SALE MONDAY, MAY 14 English rock and blues singer Joe Cocker and pop and rock hit makers Huey Lewis and the News will perform at DTE Energy Music Theatre on Thursday, August 9 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets at $75, $45 and $30 pavilion and $20 lawn, including a limited number of $15 lawn tickets and lawn ticket four-packs at $74, go on sale this Monday, May 14 at 10 a.m. at Palacenet.com, Livenation.com, The Palace Box Office and all Ticketmaster locations, including The Palace Locker Room Store at Great Lakes Crossing. Joe Cocker has been a major player in the music business for more than 40 years and his unmistakable bluesy soul voice is a musical trademark in its own right. He has released 21 studio and four live albums and has sold millions of records with a massive number of hit singles all over the world. He is a Grammy, Golden Globe and Academy Award winning artist and has even received an Order of the British Empire award. Without any doubt, Cocker is not only a true music legend but one of the most successful and popular singers of the last four decades. The iconic singer recently released his 21st studio album, Hard Knocks, to the U.S. in January 2012. The album, released in Europe in 2010, is a collection of nine new songs plus a cover version of the Dixie Chicks’ “I Hope.” Produced by Matt Serletic (Matchbox 20, Carlos Santana), Hard Knocks has the timeless ‘Cocker’ sound fusing rhythm and blues, soul and pop into an undeniable infectious mix of unique contemporary style. It reached number 48 on the Billboard Top Independent Albums chart. “I’ve spent probably more time on the streets than being educated,” explains the 66-year-old Brit. “Fans who’ve been around long enough to remember me all those years ago will probably understand the album title.” But despite the rough theme and atmosphere that it suggests, Cocker devotees don’t have to be worried about a hard-edged new musical direction, far from it. Hard Knocks is much more pop than any of his releases in recent years, especially his last album. “With Ethan Jones, who I love and with whom I made Hymn For My Soul in 2007, we almost did it like a ‘demo record.’ We were using no electronics and no special effects,” explains Joe Cocker. Playing live is and always has been an integral element of his job and one which Cocker always enjoyed immensely. Apart from presenting the songs from Hard Knocks live for the first time, he prepared another little surprise for his fans. “There are some songs that were quite successful, but always have been neglected for the live shows”, he explains. “Of course we always do ‘You Can Leave Your Hat On’ and ‘Unchain My Heart’, but now I want to do a little montage in the middle of the show that includes some old songs like ‘Simple Things’ and ‘Tonight’.” “Heart and Soul,” the title of one of their hit songs, also explains the enduring appeal of Huey Lewis & The News. For more than 30 years they have been making and performing music that resonates with people at their core. Whether it is their singing about the daily grind in “Workin’ For A Livin’” or lamenting a troubled relationship in “If This Is It,” this is a band that connects with people on a gut level. In addition to commiserating over life’s rough spots, they have also given their millions of worldwide fans a soundtrack for the celebration of life’s great moments. The driving rhythm of “Heart of Rock & Roll” sings the praises of the great music being made across the U.S., while “Stuck With You” offers a love song with a tongue-in-cheek turn of phrase and amazing harmonies. Meanwhile “The Power of Love,” which the band wrote for the hit film Back To The Future, not only went to number one on the Billboard singles chart, but also was nominated for an Academy Award. As great as their recordings are, there is something extra special about the Huey Lewis & The News live shows. Frontman Huey Lewis’ voice has a rich, textured quality that lends itself well to not just their hits but also to the Memphis soul tunes they covered on their most recent album, Soulsville. And Lewis brings some bluesy tones to the performance when he breaks out into his harmonica solos. Completing the rock, rhythm and blues feel of the band’s sound are founding members Johnny Colla (saxophone, guitar and vocals), Bill Gibson (drums, percussion and vocals), and Sean Hopper (keyboards and vocals) as well as Stef Burns (guitars and vocals) and John Pierce (bass). The horn section consists of San Francisco Bay Area luminaries Marvin McFadden (trumpet), Rob Sudduth (tenor saxophone) and Johnnie Bamont (baritone saxophone). Their playing is tight, effortlessly moving from an up front, power rock song to a smooth, laid back, soulful ballad. They even walk the musical high wire, leaving their instruments behind mid-show to perform some A Capella selections of early rock ‘n’ roll classics, such as “Sixty Minute Man,” “Under The Boardwalk” and “It’s Alright.” Joe Cocker and Huey Lewis and The News are part of the Belle Tire Concert Series. 1043womc
